Does Sprint really have a 4G network?
I just saw the commercial about the “Now Network” and at the end it said Sprint is the first company to have wireless 4G. Is this really true because 4G to me right now seems way too advanced to be out this early. Thanks!

Chrysler To Put The Internet On Wheels

Beginning this year with modifications to existing vehicles, Chrysler will be the first automaker to bring wifi Internet access to cars. (Later in the program, the capability will be added to new cars as a factory-installed item.) The system, not yet named, will utilize a connection to high-speed cellular data networks and will require the owner to have a mobile phone account. Presumably, Chrysler will forge a partnership relationship with one of the major cell phone companies to make the service available to drivers. (Currently data service plans with cell phone companies average around $40 a month.)

Although access is geared primarily for use by the vehicle’s passengers, a range of potential services will also be available to the driver, some while the car is in motion. In the company’s press release regarding the new connectivity, Chrysler mentioned:

Turn-by-turn navigation augmented by satellite images to create more realistic maps.

Wireless updates to map displays.

Weather and hazard information and alerts in real time.

Electronic service reminders for vehicle maintenance.

Updates to the vehicle’s systems via remote downloads.

The ability to search the Internet.

Purchases of music and movies online with the potential for streaming.

Transfer of video and audio files wirelessly from a home computer or laptop.

Email access with system capability for reading message aloud.

Sending of email messages through voice commands.

It should be noted, however, that the system is not promising constant access of consistent quality, factors that will depend on the availability and strength of a cellular signal. A possible issue in terms of infrastructure that will also effect the in-car wifi’s performance and ability to connect is the fact that the four major carriers in the United States all use different technologies for their broadband networks. Sprint and Verizon use EV-DO while AT&T and T-Mobile rely on 3G.

Although the complete details are unclear, Chrysler seems to be set on a track to completely redefine the function of a car’s radio. Frank Klegon, product development chief for the company, has been widely quoted saying, “We want to make the radio itself a wifi port.” (There are rumors that Chrysler is looking at the futu
1000
re role of WiMax technology in supplying connectivity for its cars.)

Regardless of the mechanics, however, it’s clear that Chrysler is taking the lead in putting the Internet on the American roadway, making it possible for the connected citizen to remain even more connected and possibly to have greater control over both his vehicle and the driving experience as a result. While the impact on driver safety has yet to be judged, it’s hard for technophile auto enthusiasts not to be excited at the prospect of being able to get online on long road trips or while stuck in traffic, an indication that other carmakers are sure to follow Chrysler in delivering in-car connectivity in the near future.

Stoke & Trustive Partner To Research Seamless Mobile Broadband Internet Services

Mobile broadband gateway provider Stoke, Inc. and WiFi Internet access provider Trustive have formed a partnership to research new technology architectures and business models that will facilitate a seamless mobile broadband data experience for an increasingly mobile workforce.

For the frequent business traveler, accessing wireless broadband coverage is a challenge to the user’s patience and wallet. The hourly fees charged by hotspot operators are inflexible, location-specific and high. Even with the pending clampdown in the European Union on excessive roaming charges, staying connected as a business traveler is an expensive, unpredictable and inconvenient task, requiring repeated web browser logins.

“Stoke and Trustive believe that we can combine our technologies to provide the frequent international traveler with the same a seamless wireless broadband experience regardless of whether that wireless access is within their home operator’s network, or the café hotspot in an airport three time zones away,” said Barry Hill, Vice President of marketing at Stoke. “Mobile operators currently target their services primarily on domestic customers and at the moment, subscribers who move outside of the operator’s coverage area are basically on their own.”

Christian VanGhelder, Managing Director of Trustive commented that “with the success of the iPhone and new mobile devices that allow access through WiFi and 3G as well as the advent of Voice over IP and high quality video and streamed media, so called ‘data traffic’ has increased significantly. This rise in demand for mobile broadband services can lead to potential traffic performance issues for mobile operators. Now, additional considerations also need to be taken into account for the future; the emergence of new mobile devices with larger screens, new chipsets (with 3G, WiFi and WiMAX embedded), operators’ financial ability to improve the current infrastructure and most importantly perhaps, the existing “unlimited” mobile packages that are the proving to be the catalyst for discussions regarding new architectures and new business and operating models that will be able to provide a seamless user experience whilst taking full advantage of the des
1000
ign point of each of the available technologies beyond the traditional stovepipe view.”

Stoke and Trustive offerings
Trustive gives travelers extensive WiFi coverage by combining the hotspot locations of more than 70 leading WiFi hotspot operators in 65+ countries into one unified, global network of more than 90,000 hotspots and allowing Trustive customers access to these locations through a single username and password. Stoke provides mobile broadband offload and coverage solutions enabling operators to improve service delivery economics, coverage and subscriber satisfaction. Stoke’s gateways provide exponential improvements in session density and cost per bit for carriers. As a result, operators have an immediate means of adapting and scaling their mobile broadband infrastructure to meet the surging demand for data, within the constraints of sharply reduced capital expenditure budgets.

Stoke and Trustive believe that as usage patterns change, carriers must develop new models that enable them to provide a well-priced and reliable service for the increasingly mobile business user. The two companies will investigate mechanisms to provide mobile broadband operators with a level of control and accounting – beyond common client and authentication – that will provide both savings and incremental revenue streams to the operator.

Areas of research will include:
•	Media independent handover of data sessions between different wireless networks (i.e. WiMAX, HSPA, and WiFi)
•	Automatic connection and authentication regardless of the operator or network type
•	Seamless application operations while mobile
•	Exploring multi-access, multi-radio networking potential with trends in mobile broadband behavior
•	Cost minimization through wireless connection arbitrage
•	Alternate wireless access as part of a 3G offload strategy
•	The operators’ competitive advantage of multi-network access service bundles.

What is a 3G (or 4G for that matter) network? Can someone explain in layman's terms?
I hear these buzzwords thrown around by cell phone companies such as Sprint and ATT and they've never explained what they mean.
What does 3G and 4G mean and what is a 3G/4G network?
